What is Single-Ply Roofing?
Single-ply roofing consists of flexible membranes that are used on low-slope and flat buildings. Made of compounded materials derived from plastics, these membranes are manufactured in a factory to ensure they meet strict quality requirements.
In recent years, the durability, longevity, and cost-effectiveness of single-ply roofing has led to a downward trend in the use of tarpaper and other older, less effective materials.
Three Types of Single-Ply Roofing
Single-ply roofing comes in three main types:
- PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
- EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer)
- TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin)
Each has distinct advantages and disadvantages, but all are good choices for a variety of applications due to their flexibility, weather and fire resistance, and energy efficiency.
The chart below indicates how each ranks on a variety of ASTM requirements:
Single-ply roofing can be installed in one of four ways:
Induction-welded, when possible
This versatility makes single-ply roofing a practical choice for even the most challenging architecture. The sheets are large, so installation goes quickly.
